While struggling as a professional singer and actress AND single mother of two boys, there was one thing I feared becoming: A statistic.
After 20 years living as a quintessential "starving artist", I had a breakthrough moment (or was it a panic attic?) one fateful afternoon, as I stood in line at a local thrift shop, waiting for my turn to pay for a pair of used shoes for my oldest son. At that moment, I couldn't help but feel like a failure. I took a long hard look at my reality and realized that no matter how hard I was working, I was still broke and living gig to gig. I knew that if I didn't turn my story around, I would probably live like this for the rest of my life. So on that fateful day, I made the decision to change my story and become, well...more.
I had no choice but to figure out a way to stop living in borderline poverty and partial government assistance. From one day to the next, I went from being a glamorous looking full-time jazz club performer to becoming a home business owner who worked in her pajamas all day. Yeah, not glamorous at all.
For two years, I had no idea what I was doing with my home business. I depleted the tiny savings I had, was forced to sell everything I owned in order to pay my rent and feed my kids. I gained 40 pounds in the process, and slowly began to isolate myself from everyone. Worst part of it-I was more broke now than when I performed for a living!
Defeat began kicking in. Unfortunately, I had underestimated how long growing a business would actually take.
I didn't give up. I worked incessantly on improving myself, becoming better skilled and was committed to making it work. I became obsessed with learning everything I could about entrepreneurship and how to sell my products. I made it my mission to learn everything I could about the sales process and adopted a newfound mindset about money along the way.
I began to see incremental growth in my home business which gave me a much needed confidence boost. That inspired me to mentor single moms individually on how to transition from poverty and government assistance into entrepreneurship. This gave rise to the creation of several workshops, including the "Savvy and Wealthy Women in Biz" workshop and teaching "newbie" entrepreneurs how to start a business from zero.
My new book "Create a Buzz in Your Biz: A Guide for the Newbie Entrepreneur " will be released soon....and yes, I'm still pinching myself from this.
Never would I have imagined my life taking such a dramatic turn. All I can say is that I am grateful for that fateful day at the thrift store.
